If you have kids, and you travel, then you’ve been tortured with, “are we there yet?” Technology has been a lifesaver for parents on trips. Today, kids can watch their favorite movies and play their favorite games while traveling, and that famous phrase almost disappears. Since kids are still kids, finding the right player for your children can depend of several factors.

Age and Responsibility Determine the Player

Younger children who tend to break things need something pretty rugged and foolproof. Before buying that multimedia player, ask around, do the research and find out which ones are best for not-so-responsible children. Start with the Leap Frog products. They’re designed for learning and wear and tear. One Step Ahead also makes a simple, rugged little multimedia player that is great for small children. Once your child proves he can take care of his things, then you can move on to the better products

iPod is Kid King

Naturally, every kid wants an iPod. For portability and versatility, it’s a fantastic product, but it’s not cheap. Make sure your child earns that iPod media player by proving he can be responsible with it. It’s a good idea to let him know there will not be a replacement. That way he’ll understand that he really does have to take care of it. However, as a product with versatility, it’s great. He can listen to music, play games and watch movies. It’s compact and easy to carry around. In that case, it’s the traveling lifesaver.

Of course, there are less expensive multimedia players, and one of these products might make better sense for your child.

When it comes to superior sound through your media player, you might be surprised to know that that old guys still rule. The iPod is a super convenient and portable device, but when it comes to the very best music playback, the big audio companies are still the best.

You Need a Great Set of Headphones

Of course, the media player itself needs to be of high quality, but that technology is lost if you don’t have the right set of headphones to represent it. If you’ve ever lost your phones and had to buy a cheap pair in a box store, you probably immediately noticed the poor sound quality. Always honor the quality of your media player with a great set of headphones.

Whether you prefer ear buds or an over the ear phones, it’s still the legendary big guns who will produce the best music listening experience. Names like Bose, Shure and Sennheiser are still king. Shure and Sennheiser happen to be two of the top live sound companies, too. They take their music technology seriously from start to finish. Makes sense, right? Bose, of course, is legendary for its sound media technology.

Good Headphones Need a Good Media Player

Perfect sound is a perfect marriage. Those great phones won’t do you any good without a great media player. The amp inside the headphone jack is key, so do the research and get the best you can. Try Cowon, Creative or iAudio. Pair them with the sound masters and you will never go back to mediocre music technology again.

The Internet has been a music lover’s playground. Now that technology has made it affordable for independent artists to record and release their music, a person could spend days simply browsing and downloading new and incredible music. That’s pretty time consuming, so along comes Pandora. Although it’s more like a music shuffle with a few surprises, people seem to love it. That begs the question, is Pandora more popular than a playlist?

The Rise of Pandora

For those who don’t know, Pandora is an internet based music program that allows the listener to create radio stations by simply entering the name of a favorite artist or music style. By matching various qualities in the music with artists who also have those qualities, Pandora will create playlists that often include artists the listener has never heard. For the music adventurist, this is a technological god send.

If a person is rigid in what they want to hear, Pandora may not be a good product, but chances are that anyone who uses it will love it. Even if the person only likes mainstream Country, then they can pretty much create that kind of radio station and never be disappointed.

Pandora is Free

Although you can buy subscriptions to Pandora, you can also sign up for a free version that includes advertisement. It’s not as annoying as radio ads, so the free version is not bad. As we get lazier and lazier due to technology, programs like Pandora could easily replace the playlist for everyone except those who demand a total immersion experience with their music.

The high price of many smartphones and tech gadgets has caused some people to avoid purchasing them.

Quick, cheap and portable technology has made it so easy to purchase, download, and listen to music anywhere, that we’ve allowed ourselves to become O.K. with poor sound quality. A digital file, such as an mp3, is compressed in a way that loses much of the clarity and “room” that music is meant to have. Real audiophiles have complained about this for years, but finally, technology has advanced enough that there is a way regain high sound quality in music.

What is FLAC?

FLAC is free lossless audio codec. That means that as the conversion from the original source to the digital source happens, nothing is lost. For those who have never heard lossless music reproduction, they will be amazed. For those who miss it, they will feel redeemed. Vinyl was the last lossless playback format, and very few people still listen to it. It’s expensive to reproduce music that way, and digital files are cheap and easy to reproduce. Therefore, the FLAC file seems to be the answer to reconciling technology with music purity.

Preserve the Sound of Your Old Records

With FLAC, you can transfer your old vinyl records to digital files without losing the amazing sound quality they provide. Finally, the day has come when you can actually have perfect sound in a portable format. Indeed. There are FLAC players and apps. In fact, Apple supports one that works with the iPad and iPod.

As FLAC comes more into favor, there should be a number of media players that will support it, and great music will go back to the superior sound of the 1980s.

Did you used to be a bookworm, but now you find you lack the attention to read a good novel? Many people have discovered this to be true. Over the last ten years, the Internet and videos have taken on a more prominent role in the way we gather information. Even the most avid reader may find himself prefering to watch a video rather than read an article. There seems to be some evidence that video is taking over reading.

Technolgoy and the Way We Read

Even if you still read, chances are you have an eReader. Kindle and Nook are a great, portable way to take everything from the classics to the New York Times everywhere you go. Certainly, there are people who still prefer the tactile feel of a book or paper, but even those people like their eReader for traveling. As video becomes more prominent in education, kids and adult learners may find themselves preferring that medium for gathering information fast.

Is Video Good or Bad?

Video isn’t bad. Video allows us to gather more information fast. The point of caution is for those who never go deeper in the information gathering process. Reading is still the more detailed and complete way to really learn. However, the Internet and cable television make it very easy to learn and experience many topics that one might not have normally known about. If you see a cool video on a cool subject, look for some books on that subject to increase your knowledge.

Video doesn’t make us dumber. It can actually give us the chance to be smarter.
